The dilemmas
I think perhaps the best place to vent all comments and suggestions is in my own blog.

Seriously, what is the difference between a tuition teacher and a school teacher? In my own definition, I think that being a tuition teacher only has the duty to make her students improve and score well academically. There are no strings attached other than the termly reports of the school results. If you are good, students remain and multiplies. However, parents nowadays are very picky about tuition teachers too. Write too much also complain, no homework also complain. This tuition teacher no good, then change another one. 老子有钱,不怕没地方花。

A school teacher is the one who handles the class of 30 or 40 students who are like children to her. Because the time you see them is more than that of some parents. The school teacher identifies the characters of the students and determines their strengths and weaknesses. However what follows behind all these, is the administrative matters of carrying out activities and informing parents of the children's progress. This is what all teachers dislike and one of the main reason why school teachers turn to tuition upon quitting the mainstream education career.

My own view is that the admin work that is necessary is no less a protocol to follow and ensure that each child has an equal opportunity to learn and progress. Being a school teacher not only imparts knowledge but also involves a job that all mothers do, which is to mould the characters and take care of their well-beings. As such, there is a lot of things which are unrelated to teaching involved in a school teacher's job. As the mainstream education focuses too much on academic grades, it has influenced the teachers to be oriented towards "grades are the most important" mindset. And therefore some think that they only want to teach, they don't want admin work. Who is to blame for this? It should be the past generations and the realistic world that sets the trend that only with high qualifications will qualify you to have a better future.

Sometimes, when I see colleagues or friends talking about leaving the industry, I think that they have finally succumbed to the reality of abandoning the growth of a whole child to focus on the academic side of a child. I personally think that it is a selfish thought to do so. I respect the senior teachers who are able to pull the whole thing off and say that if they could turn back time, they would still choose teaching as their careers because it is meaningful. With all due respect, this post is not directed at anyone. It is just a let-out of my feelings towards the definition of a teacher.
